The Big Family Cooking Showdown Final No Zoe Ball
The BBC'due south cosy new series The Big Family unit Cooking Showdown hopes to do for British family unit cooking what The Great British Bake Off did for baking, and the similarities between the 2 are uncanny.
But hosts Zoe Brawl and Nadiya Hussain seem convinced it's even ameliorate than the show that was pulling in xiv meg viewers when C4 poached it from BBC1 last year. Then is this the new Bake Off?

The bear witness sees 16 families competing against each other by cooking both in their ain homes and in the Cooking Showdown studio for the judges, Italian chef Giorgio Locatelli and cook Rosemary Shrager.
If Giorgio and Rosemary, by comparison, are the Paul and Mary of the series, then are Nadiya and Zoe the new Mel and Sue?

"And Zoe has helped me learn – when hosting in the studio, there have been times when I think: 'I'thou not getting this,' so I endeavour something differently. And she'due south helped me to just just breathe!"
"Like anybody else I'd watched Nadiya win Broil Off and wanted to exist her friend!" laughs Zoe. "She's inspired me and I've followed her tips in the kitchen – she's even been over to my place to teach me how to melt a korma. I've learnt a lot virtually food from her and we've become great friends."
"I tin now call Rosemary and Giorgio my friends also," beams Nadiya. "They are cooking legends. I grew upwards watching Rosemary."
For judges Giorgio and Rosemary, there's ane very big bonus in joining this show: they finally get asked to people'southward houses for dinner.

"Sometimes friends are nervous to cook for me and will say: 'Ooh, I can't have you for dinner' – what a stupid, stupid comment," says Rosemary, 66.
"I find that really annoying. Only going to people's homes for this show was the best because they are cooking the style they honey to cook. Just nosotros're non allowed in their kitchens – we literally have to sit at the dining room table. Information technology's quite humbling really."
"My wife [Plaxy] and I don't go invited to dinner much," admits Giorgio, 54, who runs Locanda Locatelli in London's Mayfair.
"We run across friends on Instagram having dinner left, right and centre, and we're told: 'Come round later!'
"Plaxy always says to me: 'You never, ever complain about food,' and that's especially true when I'm not paying for it. When you lot become to somebody'southward house, I'd rather put information technology in my pocket than exit it on my plate and be asked why I didn't eat it. If somebody makes the try to cook for you, y'all take to have it."
"Just both of us aren't frightened of saying what nosotros actually feel," insists Rosemary.
"We did generally agree, although Giorgio enjoyed a Brussels sprout pizza, which I did not like whatsoever. I love Brussels sprouts, but that was not something to do on a pizza. I thought: 'Where are your sense of taste buds, Giorgio?!' He did a bit of correcting my Italian besides, and then I did tell him to go away a few times [laughs]."

Thankfully, there's been petty need for Giorgio and Rosemary to stuff their pockets with the fare served up to them during filming.
In each of the 12 episodes, 2 families – each with iii team members – go caput to head in three challenges (come across box, left).
Both judges admit they've been blown abroad by the results.
"What has surprised me is the diversity of the nutrient and what they could exercise with the £10 Challenge," says Rosemary.
"I was gobsmacked. They had feasts. The Indian families came upwards with some of the best food I accept always tasted, using recipes that had been handed down through generations – and that, to me, is very special. I tasted things I'd never had before."
"I was looking at the £10 Challenge and thinking: 'F**thou, I can't do this!'" laughs Giorgio, who learnt almost food from an early age watching his grandmother cook and helping out in his uncle'south kitchen in northern Italy.
"I was surprised at the standard. I of the things that blew me away was that people could cook food from around the world with such ease.
"If we did this in Italy, some people wouldn't even cook things that are our national dishes. Those from the due south don't potable the wine from the north, the people from the north don't drink the vino from the southward, but here in the UK you lot accept this melting pot.
"There was this Italian family on the show – the father was Italian, the mum and daughter were British – and they cooked this Thai repast that was the standard of a restaurant."
While Rosemary is something of an old hand when it comes to judging television cookery shows, this is new territory for Michelin-starred Giorgio, who has rejected such offers in the past.
"I accept been asked very kindly to do shows similar this and MasterChef, but I found them dull to watch and would observe it more boring to practice them," says Giorgio.
"A show near family cooking turned me on directly away. And when I institute out we would be going into people's houses, that's a really big thing.
"I live in a flake of a bubble of Camden Town [with Plaxy and their two children, Margherita and Jack] and Mayfair, with the best produce coming from Italy served to me on a silverish plate with the best wine.
It's the life of a chef. What we eat at abode reflects what we are serving at that fourth dimension in the restaurant.

Giorgio also needed prompting when it came to identifying the show's presenters – "Plaxy helped me out" – but Rosemary had no such trouble, having taken part in Bake Off 'due south spin-off show An Extra Slice when Nadiya won.
"Nadiya really is a clever girl," explains Rosemary. "I've been in the business for many, many years, but for somebody who has but gone into it, she's a natural. And then you've got the gorgeous Zoe, who is such fun."
Would Rosemary take fancied taking over on Bake Off herself when Mary Drupe declined to move to Channel four with the show?
"No, I wouldn't!" says Rosemary.
"I wish Broil Off all the luck in the world. I want them to do well, but for me it would take been the incorrect move.

"Trying to take someone else'due south place is not easy, it's a poisoned chalice. Yous accept to exist a flake careful.
"Also, I liked Broil Off the way the BBC did information technology. Information technology's going to be completely different now. Information technology has to be different. And I promise it's great.

"To me, 1 of the nicest things about the show is the relationship between the families themselves and how that dynamic can change when things go slightly wrong. Who'south going to be the boss? Who's the sous chef? It'southward fascinating."
